Lui Orozco is a PhD Candidate at the Institute for Computational Design and Construction (ICD) at the University of Stuttgart, Germany. He is also a registered architect in the state of New York, USA. He is a member of the EXC 2120: Cluster of Excellence IntCDC – Integrative Computational Design and Construction for Architecture where his research focuses on a novel, digital, modular wood building system to enable the adoption of prefabricated timber construction in additional building typologies.
Prior to joining the ICD, Lui worked as a Computational Designer and Project Architect at HKS Architects in London, UK. There, he applied computational design thinking and techniques, and coordinated international project teams across sectors, specialising in Health and Stadium projects and a focusing on the MENA region. He was project lead on the Kuwait Children’s Hospital, which was a finalist for Future Project of the Year: Health at the World Architecture Festival 2017.
Lui received his M.Arch from the Taubman College at the University of Michigan, USA, where he instituted and taught the university’s first Introduction to Robotic Fabrication course. He received his B.Sc.Arch. at McGill University, Canada.
Recently, Lui co-taught the Dual-Additive Manufacturing Combining Timber and In-Process Bio-Based 3D-Printing workshop at the ACADIA 2020 conference. He is currently Co-Chair of the IntCDC Early Career Board, and was Chair of the University of Michigan’s Architecture Student Research Grant Committee. He has been the recipient of numerous honours and awards, including the 2017 HKS Design Fellowship, addressing the UN’s 2016 Sustainable Development Goals, and won the 2017 HKS Idea Fellowship for the joint project “Embedding Intelligence in Stadium Design”. He was a Director of London Rowing Club Ltd, the oldest rowing club on London’s Putney Embankment.
